Paul Osicka Selection Heathcote Shiraz 2024
In the early 1950s, the Osicka family immigrated from Czechoslovakia. Their vineyard in Australia was the first new venture in central and southern Victoria in more than a half-century. There have been significant changes since Simon Osicka's return to the family business. Red wine fermentation has shifted from static to open fermenters, and French oak has replaced American oak. The 65-year-old estate plantings have been extensively trellised. The installation of a conveyor belt allows for 100% berry sorting and eliminates the need for pumping; another improvement is the installation of new vats. Simon's father, Paul Osicka, died in 2019 after 50 vintages and more than 60 years in the vineyards.
This bold and full flavoured red displays lots of blueberry and mulberry on the nose, with licks of eucalyptus and sweet herb, a touch of clove spice. Soft and silky on the palate, it has an ultra long finish with a gently build of fine tannin.
