Thousand Candles Single Vineyard Syrah 2018
The winery and vineyard, originally known as Killara Estate, was established in 1997 with Bill Downie as the original winemaker. Owner Stuart Proud took over wine making duties some 5 years ago.
The entire property has been bio-dynamically managed since 2010.
"Wild yeast fermented with a high percent of whole bunches in the pot. Minimal sulphur and no new oak – indeed, the ‘newest’ oak was four years old. Ultra-fined grained tannin is but one of this wine’s features. Finesse is another. So too complexity. This is a beautiful wine, crafted to great effect, its flavours of roasted nuts, dried herbs, black pepper and cherry-plum delivered in pure, delicious, impeccable form. It’s enough to make you stand back and marvel. It’s excellent now, and it’s going places." 96pts - Campbell Mattinson - WineFront
"Hand-picked and hand-sorted in the winery, one parcel fermented with 100% whole bunches. Powerful and complex, medium to full-bodied overall. Here the tannins make their presence felt, but are better balanced and integrated than its Gathering Field sibling. Intense red berries remain the centre of a palate also offering darker fruit notes, earth, tannins and spices." 96pts - James Halliday - Wine Companion
